In today’s world, the most successful companies are those that invest not only in their people but also in their spaces. When one business approached Smart Turf to transform an underused outdoor area into something unique, the goal was clear: create a functional, inviting, and fun environment for employees to enjoy year-round.

Rather than leaving this multi-purpose area idle, Smart Turf’s design team saw potential — not just for one large putting green, but for three distinct putting areas, each designed to encourage recreation, relaxation, and engagement. The project also featured a custom-built sand pit, bringing the authentic golf experience right to the workplace.

Project Overview

Client Type: Corporate / Commercial Property
Location: Southern California
Project Goal: Convert an unused outdoor multi-purpose area into a dynamic putting green space that employees can use for leisure and during company events.
Smart Turf Products Used: Eagle Putt and Playzone Plus
Unique Features:

  • Three putting zones instead of one continuous area

  • Integrated sand pit for added play variety

  • Designed for low water use and easy maintenance

  • Built for heavy foot traffic and corporate event use

The Challenge: An Unused Outdoor Space with Untapped Potential

Like many corporate campuses, this client had a multi-purpose outdoor space that was rarely used. It lacked visual appeal, purpose, and functionality. Employees walked past it daily, but few found a reason to spend time there.

They wanted to turn this forgotten space into something that added value — both to their team culture and to their property’s aesthetics. The vision was to create a space that could:

  • Encourage casual team interaction

  • Provide a relaxing outlet during breaks

  • Serve as an attraction during large corporate events

The challenge? The space was large and open, but a single putting green would have been underwhelming — visually and functionally. Smart Turf’s design team proposed something different: three putting areas strategically placed throughout the site to create zones of play and activity.

The Design: Breaking Tradition for Better Engagement

Instead of one expansive putting surface, Smart Turf designed three distinct putting areas, each with its own character and challenge.

This design approach served multiple purposes:

  1. Encouraging movement: Employees could move between greens, turning casual practice into light physical activity.

  2. Accommodating more players: During company events, multiple groups can use the space simultaneously without crowding.

  3. Enhancing visual appeal: Each green became a focal point and framed by natural contours.

The addition of a custom sand pit brought a touch of realism and variety, transforming the area into a true mini golf experience.

Every green was carefully planned to include subtle undulations and realistic putting speeds, offering both casual fun and genuine practice opportunities.

The Installation Process

As with all Smart Turf installations, precision and craftsmanship guided every step of the process.

1. Site Preparation

The existing surface was cleared and leveled to create a stable foundation. Drainage was assessed and optimized to ensure longevity and playability.

2. Sub-Base and Contouring

A layered aggregate base was installed to promote water flow and provide the right contour. Smart Turf’s installation crew sculpted gentle slopes into the design to simulate the feel of a real golf course.

3. Turf Selection and Laying

For this project, Smart Turf’s signature Eagle Putt was used — a premium putting synthetic turf engineered for true ball roll and soft touch underfoot. Its dual-tone fibers mimic the natural sheen of real grass while maintaining professional-level performance. Also, Smart Turf’s Playzone Plus was used for the putting green fringe.

4. Infill and Finishing

Infill was brushed into the turf fibers to control speed and stability. Once completed, cup holes and flags were installed, and finishing touches like edging and landscaping were added to seamlessly integrate the new greens with their surroundings.

5. Sand Pit Integration

The sand pit was framed with treated lumber and filled with premium golf bunker sand. It not only enhances the play experience but also adds textural contrast, making the space visually dynamic.

The Result: A Recreational Space that Inspires Connection

The transformation was immediate. What was once an empty, unused patch of land is now a vibrant recreational hub. Employees can now take short breaks to recharge, practice their short game, or simply enjoy the outdoors.

During larger company events, the multi-zone layout allows for mini tournaments or casual team competitions — promoting engagement, laughter, and camaraderie.

Beyond its practical use, the installation also serves as a powerful visual statement. The lush green turf contrasts beautifully against the company’s building, making it an eye-catching feature that reflects innovation and care for employee well-being.

Sustainability and Smart Turf Advantage

This project also reflects Smart Turf’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and performance. Each putting surface is made with eco-conscious materials, including water-efficient turf fibers that require no mowing, watering, or fertilizing.

Environmental Benefits:

  • Water conservation: Up to 55,000 gallons saved annually compared to natural grass.

  • Low maintenance: No chemicals, mowing, or re-sodding.

  • Durability: Built to withstand high foot traffic and year-round exposure to the elements.

In addition, Smart Turf’s USA-based manufacturing ensures consistent quality, shorter lead times, and responsible production practices.

Employee Experience: More Than Just a Putting Green

While the new space adds fun to the workplace, it’s more than recreation — it’s about fostering a positive company culture.

Studies consistently show that employees with access to outdoor activity spaces report higher levels of creativity, job satisfaction, and stress relief. This putting green area became an investment in morale and wellness, encouraging spontaneous interaction and offering a relaxing outlet during busy workdays.
