Backyard artificial grass

We get this question often: How much artificial grass will I need for my project? Smart Turf artificial turf is a fantastic choice for creating a lush and low-maintenance lawn. To ensure you order the right amount of artificial grass for your specific area, we’ve put together these simple step-by-step instructions:

Materials You Will Need:

  • Measuring tape or measuring wheel
  • Pen and paper
  • Calculator
  • Graph paper (optional)

Step 1: Measure the Area

Begin by measuring the area where you plan to install the artificial turf. One way is to measure the widest and longest parts of your area. For irregularly shaped spaces, you can measure that space by dividing them into smaller, more manageable sections (rectangles, squares, or triangles) and measuring each separately.

rectangle with length and widthStep 2: Calculate Total Square Footage

To find the total square footage of your project area, multiply the length by the width of each section you measured. If you have an irregularly shaped area, break it down into smaller sections and calculate the square footage for each. Then, add the square footage together to get the total area.

Example:

Area 1: 40 ft x 30 ft = 1,200 sq ft

Area 2: 25 ft x 20 ft = 500 sq ft

Total Area: 1,200 sq ft + 500 sq ft = 1,700 sq ft

Step 3: Add Extra for Cutting and Seaming

It’s recommended to add 5-10% extra to your total square footage to account for cutting and seaming. This ensures you have enough material to cover the entire area, including any angles or curves.

Step 4: Select the Turf Style

Choose the type of artificial turf you want based on your preferences, needs, and budget. Different turf styles will have different pile heights and blade densities. Two of Smart Turf’s most popular turf are Cypress Point for landscaping and Smart Pet Plus for pet turf.

Step 5: Check Roll Width

Smart Turf artificial turf comes in 15’ standard width rolls.

Step 6: Calculate the Length

Divide your total square footage (including the extra you added in step 3) by the width of the roll. This will give you the linear feet you need to order.

Example:

Total area (with 10% extra): 1,870 sq ft

Roll width: 15 ft

Linear feet needed: 1,870 sq ft / 15 ft = 124.67 sq.ft (round up to 125 sq.ft)
